Biography of Skadi
Skadi (also called Skaði, Skade or Skathi) is a giantess and goddess in Norse mythology, mainly associated with winter, the mountains, hunting and skiing. She is the daughter of the giant Thjazi and is also called "öndurdís" or "öndurgoð", which means "ski goddess"2.
Origin and family
Skadi's father, Thjazi, was mistakenly killed by the Aesir, prompting Skadi to go to Asgard to seek revenge. The Aesir offered her a choice: she could choose a husband from among them, but only on the basis of their feet. Skadi chose Njord, the god of the sea, hoping it was Balder. The Aesir also fulfilled her second condition: Loki made her laugh, making peace2.
Features and Attributes
Skadi is often depicted as a powerful woman using a bow and arrow and moving around on skis. She lives in Thrymheim, the thunder world in the mountains, where her father once lived2.
Role and stories
Skadi plays an important role in several stories within Norse mythology. Her marriage to Njord was not a happy one, because she preferred the mountains and he preferred the sea2. They decided to compromise: nine nights they would be in the mountains and nine nights by the sea. However, this compromise did not work, and they eventually parted ways2.
Symbolism and Worship
Skadi symbolizes the power and majesty of nature, especially the mountains and winter. Believers can call upon her for protection and wisdom in the mountains and during the winter.
Relationship with the Aesir and Vanir
After her marriage to Njord, Skadi is also associated with the Vanir, another group of gods in Norse mythology. In some myths, it is said that she is also Freyr's mother, although this seems to be incorrect information2.
Skadi's story offers valuable insights into the natural forces and complexities of Norse mythology.
